I am more!

I am more than...
...just a mom.
...single.
...female.
...injury prone.
...emotional.
...what you see on Facebook.
...a small business owner.
...a single mom.
...a daughter.
...an ex-wife or ex-girlfriend.
...a friend.
...creative and/or crafty.
...a thinker.
...loyal (to a fault sometimes).
...photographer.
...seamstress.
...active.
...a caregiver.
...an encourager.
...what you see on the outside.
...etc....etc...etc... (You could fill in your own blanks here).
I am so much more than just one adjective. I cannot be summed up in a single word, or by labeling me as just one aspect of my life. I'm not just a single mom. I'm not just a mom of teenagers. I'm not just a mom of a kid with special needs. I'm not JUST anything.
I am more.
Just like both my daughters are more than just red or brown haired. Short tempered. Teenagers. Opposites. Whatever you could say to describe them or me. You can't base what you think about a person based on one characteristic anymore than you can judge a book by its cover.
So why is it that this happens so often?  Why is there a tendency to make snap decisions based off of what your newsfeed decides to show you on Facebook?  (Side note: please don't judge anyone based off what you see on fb...especially when algorithms decide what you are even shown of their posts...and the fact that no one puts every single detail of their life on fb). Why categorize people and then only see them as one category?  No one on the face of this planet is just married or just single...there is soooo much more to life than that. I don't know a single soul that wants to be known as only single or only married or only a parent/not a parent, or just by their hair color.
I realize that this can be a part of life. That everyone sees the people around them through their own, sometimes jaded, point of view. That sometimes that plays in your favor and sometimes hurts insanely.
But why?  Why do we choose to live like that?  Why do we judge others, because honestly that's what it boils down to...especially when there is NO WAY we know all the circumstances. What happened to compassion and grace and choosing to see the best in each other and being our best self around each other?  Why does love and mercy get lost and not freely shared?
Remember the old wwjd that used to be so popular?  What would Jesus do?  He befriended sinners but loved the person...seeing way more than their shortfalls and provided hope, love, mercy, grace, compassion. He met them where they were, but showed them how to move forward in healing. He gave freely of Himself...not with ulterior motives or planning what He would get back in return. He saw the whole picture, the big picture, and knew who He was living for...that have Him a confidence only found in living out your calling...living sold out for the Father.
Now, I know we aren't Jesus. We are human, not perfect and sinless. But in His power, we can live different.  We can choose not to waste time judging others. We can spend more time working on changing ourselves and becoming the best version of ourself as we walk the path He has for each one of us. We can choose to not categorize, or stick people in boxes we never allow them to climb out of. We can choose to react different and realize we don't see or get every detail...and maybe the way we took it wasn't the way it was meant. Because each of us could write our own list of "I am more than..."

Nostalgic and emotional

Last night I was working on this
Which is my start at making a lace overlay for a bag idea I have in my head. Right now, they just look like doilies, because there are so many pieces yet to make and I am slower at this then I imagined. But I got emotional and kept thinking about the grandma that I don't even remember. I was using her needle, and the girls and I stopped and talked about it. Banana even went in the other room and grabbed the doily I have that grandma made...that's been in my room since I was a teen...and moved all over Missouri with me over the years. And I just got sad. That I can't remember her at all outside of a few pictures. That I never got to sit down with her and craft and listen to stories about my mom growing up. That there are no three generation pictures and my girls never got to meet her.
It was pretty emotional. Which is actually becoming pretty normal around here...seems that crying is yet another of the aftershocks I have with this concussion. I've cried more (and sometimes over absolutely nothing, not just little things, but nothing) in the last three weeks with this concussion then I can remember doing in my life (unless I was in the middle of grieving a loss). It's been just one more thing we are trying to get used to around here.
The hardest part tho, is how much I still have to rest, and how much I feel like I am missing of my girls' lives as life keeps moving at a much faster rate than my injured brain can keep up with. And I'm trying so hard not to get discouraged, or to be a burden to my friends...but still so limited. Trying to trust that God is doing His thing, even when I cannot see or fathom what is going on. And there is just a phrase of a chorus of a song that plays often on Klove..."there is power in the name of Jesus...break every chain" that I am clinging to, and seems to be playing on repeat in my head.

Stretching those faith muscles again...

Since this last concussion (Becky: 0, ladder: 1), I have not been able to concentrate for more than an hour or so at a time. Then I find myself either sleeping or at least having to close my eyes and do nothing for a good half hour or longer. I did 7 days of couch rest, and another week of hardly anything. This week, I'm trying to do just a little more, but still fighting off discouragement on how slow this process has been. But honestly, for a fifth concussion, I probably am doing great.
It took me way longer than normal, with lots of stops and breaks, but I was able to make a single bag last week...that not only tested my abilities with a concussion, but also tested the limitations of my workhorse sewing machine...revealing that if I keep growing as a designer and seamstress, I am going to have to add another machine to my business. This bag was actually finished on a machine at the Missouri Sewing Machine Company store on N Oak and Barry Rd while I turned my machine in for a tuneup and cleaning.
It turned out amazing, thanks to their machine's ability to sew through crazy thicknesses as if it was butter.
Since sewing on their machine and discovering that my skills/wants were beginning to push the limits of my machine, I allowed myself to dream. If this is what God is asking of me, and He sure has been providing the special orders to reassure me repeatedly that it is...then acquiring this machine will just be another example of Him providing for me to walk out what He has asked of me. My mom has actually called me daily (to check on me in my concussion state), and begun to ask me if God has sold a cow yet. In the bible, psalm's I believe, there is a verse that says God owns the cattle on a thousand hills, reminding us that He has resources that are limitless. The idea to have a gofundme account to see if people would join together to help us out with this one, came from that.
What I cannot do on my own, He is more than able to do. And I have seen Him repeatedly put something like this on people's hearts to help out with.
Would you be willing to come alongside us and help us to be able to purchase the machine that will allow my creativity and designs to continue to become reality...that in turn is our main source of income?  My girls and I have been so blessed to be able to do this as a job...they love coming home from school and figuring out which bag is the one mom created that day. And they love knowing exactly where I am and that I am accessible and available. And with banana's therapy schedule about to get heavier...this job has truly been a God send!  Would you like to help support us in this?
