I was incredubly inspired by this pic of a quilt from Pinterest.
So, I bought 40 fat quarters in a rainbow of colors/shades. And it sat for awhile waiting for me to finish special orders and craft show projects.
Then Christmas break with the girls, and getting sick for New Years even week. I was finally able to hold my own head up, so I sat on my dining room floor and cut out the first 800 2" squares and laid out this...
And I wasn't loving it. Especially the green.
So, ms toad helped me pick up the pieces...
And this was attempt 2...
But I wasn't loving it either. To me it looked too pixilated. So I picked it all up again.
Attempt 3...
Completely different look, but by now I'm realizing that I could go sooooo many ways with this and my brain is coming up with so many variations that all I could see even when my eyes were closed was a rainbow of squares.
And I was really wishing I had a design wall at this house, so that I could have my floor back, and not be on my knees trying to lay it all out again. And I knew I wanted to keep playing with it before it became the wall hanging behind my couch 3/4ths of the year.
Woke up this morning and went to church, thinking that I would come home, make a design wall and go to town...also meaning that I had to pull 800 pieces off again to do so.
After church we were surprised by friend who blessed us with a trip out to eat, which was a huge blessing and treat for us, and then handed us a shopping gift card, and I was fighting back tears of gratefulness. Meant the world to me.
We ran an errand and I was checking my facebook newsfeed. In that, I discovered that a high school friend, and fellow mom of a special needs child (and member of my church), found out she had breast cancer this past week. She loved the first quilt layout and i asked her if she would allow me to make her a lap sized version. So, after a short meeting with Miles and his momma (I start babysitting him twice a week tomorrow), I picked all the pieces up, pinned the felt to the wall, and blissfully worked the next four and a half hours on this layout...
It's quite a bit bigger than my wall hanging will be...and my version is set aside for now as i make this for her...hopefully finishing before her surgery. And hopefully, it will be a reminder to her of God's crazy big love for her and all the friends who are supporting her as she fights.
And, she's already approved this layout. Hopefully during nap time tomorrow, I can work on sewing up all these squares! All 1,020 of them. And I'm. It kidding when I say it's an honor to make this for her!
